A major fire engulfed 79 year old Makerere University Main administration Building in Kampala on Sunday morning. According to the University’s social media platforms, the fire was sprouting from the right side of the building where pasty of the roof had sunk in. Although the main source of the fire is not yet known but people and the fire brigade tried there best to put the fire down. The building being almost 40% wood and 60% paper and computers the UgPolice fire brigade reachwed a point and run out of the water which left the building on the mercies of God.
This happened late in the night at at around 1am which made it hard for the fire to easily be put out. The building with its unique 20th Century British architectural designs is one of the University’s oldest structures, the signature symbol of Uganda’s oldest and biggest University. It was completed in 1941 with funding from the colonial Development Bourse.
Ivory Tower houses several offices including the University’s main hall, University printery and Vice Chancellor’s office . The building also holds students records, and the basement is full of archive files spanning the whole history of the institution.
