Former Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party president Dr Col. Kizza Besigye has joined a group of other Ugandans to mourn the death of Bishop John Baptist Kaggwa.
Through his official Facebook page, Kizza described the deceased Bishop John Baptist Kaggwa as an all-round strong spiritual leader and true servant of God who will be greatly missed by the entire nation. Besigye’s sympathy message to the family and entire Catholic Church fraternity for the great loss read as below,
“A great prelate, an all-round strong leader, and, truly, a man of God, Bishop John Baptist Kaggwa returns to the Lord. My heartfelt sympathy and prayers go to the family, the Archbishop Cyprian Kizito Lwanga and the entire Catholic Church. A great loss for the Country. Rest in perfect peace.”
According to the confirmation released on Wednesday evening, Rt. Rev John Baptist Kaggwa who formerly was the Masaka Catholic Diocese Bishop succumbed to Covid-19.
The Diocesan Communications Director, Rev Fr. Ronald Mayanja relayed that the departed has been battling with the deadly virus which he contracted two months ago.
“It’s true the Bishop has gone to be with the Lord. He succumbed to Covid-19, which he has been battling for two months.”
The Bishop’s death happens when hospitals nationwide are already overwhelmed by the growing numbers of the coronavirus victims. Succeeding the Wednesday Ministry of Health coronavirus update, 94 news cases from COVID-19 tests were announced done on 19 January 2021.
Consequently this takes the cumulative confirmed cases to 38,628. Where 305 of them succumbed to Covid-19 while 13,413 have recovered from the virus after the Ministry also noting eight recent recoveries.
Life of Bishop John Baptist Kaggwa.
Bishop John Baptist Kaggwa was born on 23 March 1943 at Bulenga, Busiro County, Wakiso District in the central region of Uganda.
The Bishop went to Lubaga Boys Primary School from 1952 accomplishing his Primary 6 in 1957. He also attended Kisubi Minor Seminary in 1958 and while there, the Bishop studied Latin. Bishop advanced to Katigondo Major Seminary where he studied Philosophy.
He was then sent to Pontifical Urban University, Rome in 1965 on scholarship. Bishop John Baptist Kaggwa was in May 1970 ordained deacon in Rome.
At 28 years, he was ordained a priest in Rome on 12 December 1971. The Bishop has been holding a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Canon Law and Secular Law, awarded by Pontifical Urban University at the time of his death.
He also served as Coadjutor Bishop of Masaka, Uganda for more than two years from 19 December 1994 to 10 January 1998. He then served as Bishop Emeritus of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Masaka.
Bishop Kaggwa was succeeded by Bishop Severus Jjumba on July 6, 2019 after his retirement on 16, April 2018.
