A team of 40 lawyers have been lined up by the National Resistance Movement (NRM) to secure the party against a petition in which the National Unity Platform (NUP) group is looking for the cancellation of the election of Yoweri Kaguta Museveni in the 2021 presidential polls which gave him victory.
Hon Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, the NUP opposition leader on Monday filed a legal contest in the country’s supreme court in quest of cancelation of the results of the 14 January presidential ballots which were announced by Electoral Commission chairman, Justice Simon Byabakama.
According to NUP, 26 grounds were listed including intimidation of NUP Agents and supporters, ballot stuffing and pre-ticked ballot papers.
On that basis, National Resistance Movement (NRM) the ruling party has placed a 40-man legal team led by the party legal director Oscar Kihika.
These will face off with the NUP’S 25-man legal team who petitioned the Supreme Court to overturn the outcome of the general election.
Sharing their thoughts, the NRM lawyers led by Kihika said that he feels pity for the petitioners adding that they have only 20% of the evidence collected that is useful referring to the rest as hearsay (Wolokoso).
“It would be silly not to prepare for an election petition. You start preparing early so that when the petitions come, you are prepared. I feel sorry for the petitioners, it is only 20% of the evidence collected that is useful, the rest id hearsay,” said Oscar Kihika.
“You can file a thousand allegations but all that matters is the substance in there. If there is no substance, then it will be wastage of time.”
