Arsenal broke a sixteen-season spell without a league double against Chelsea with a 1-0 win last night. Arsenal had last beaten the blues twice in the 2003-2004 season, their first league win at Stamford Bridge since October 2011.
A series of misplaced passes from the back line ended with the Gunners with a non-deserved goal at the back of the net. Jorginho’s misplaced pass forced a save by Keppa, who put the ball in the path of Aubameyang. The keeper could not recover to save the second time, Emile Smith Rowe scoring from Aubameyang’s assist.

Chelsea grew into the game, keeping Arsenal busy with a series of attempts to try and recover. The Gunners were not swayed, Leno denying all attempts from the blues to keep Arsenal’s lead intact for 90 minutes.
The Blues’ loss sets a bad image for their weekend encounter against Leicester City in the FA cup final at Wembley Stadium. Their loss renewed waning Liverpool hopes of a top 4 finish, The Reds only 7 points behind them.
However, a loss against Manchester United trashes Liverpool’s hopes, two games left to end the campaign. They would have failed to penetrate top four by a point, inadvertently sending them to UEFA Europa since the 2015-16 season.
Chelsea retain 4th place, 6 points clear of 5th placed West Ham currently at 57 points. Two more losses against Leicester City, 3 days after facing them in FA cup, and a game away at Aston Villa 5 days later could prove lethal.
This means Chelsea need at one more win in those fixtures, denying them a chance to rest starting XI players a week to their final clash against Manchester city in the Champions League.
The win was more important to Arteta, whose job hangs in balance. The win is a clean spot against a muddied back drop, convincing fans and top management to retain him. The Spaniard has only gathered 55 points in 36 matches in the domestic league, and failed to advance to the Europa final.
Football puns believe it likely that Chelsea cannot prevent at least one more loss in the 4 remaining games. Chelsea will have to play 4 times in the space of a week, the longest a 6-day breather to the Champions League.
